WHAT CRITERIA ARE EVALUATED TO CREATE A SMILE DESIGN?
Gingival health: Free gingiva: extends from the free gingival margin to the apical gingival sulcus, pink in color and has a dull surface. The attached gingiva extends from the gingival (coronal) sulcus to the mucogngival junction, pink in color and firm “orange peel” texture. The alveolar mucosa apical to the mucogingival junction should be loose or mobile and dark red in color. Gingival embrasures or gingival filling: The interdental spaces are occupied by the scalloping of soft tissues that form the interdental papilla. The space between teeth is filled by the gum papilla. If this criterion is not met, we cannot achieve aesthetics. Dental axes: The axial axes of the teeth are inclined distally in the inciso-apical direction. The inclination is evidently accentuated from the central incisors towards the canines. Zenith of the gingival contour: It is the most apical point of the gingival contour that is normally located distal to the medial axis of the tooth. Possible exceptions: upper lateral incisors and lower incisors. Balance between the gingival margins: The gingival margin of the lateral incisors should be located a little more coronal compared to the situation of the central incisors and canines. Level of interdental contact: The position of the contact point. Interdental contact is related to the position and morphology of the tooth. It is more coronal or incisal between the ICs and tends to migrate apically as we move towards the posterior dentition.
Relative dimensions of the tooth: Proportions between teeth. Basic features of the shape of the teeth: Square, triangular or more ovoid. Characterization of the tooth: Opalescence: optical property of enamel and refers to the ability to transmit a certain range of wavelengths. from natural light (red-orange tones) and reflect others (blue-violet tones)(enamel); Fluorescence: ability to absorb light energy and transmit it at a different wavelength (dentin); Translucency: appearance resulting from the combination of complete opacity and complete transparency (incisal edges). Tooth texture: The reliefs of the texture in the labial incisal surface of the tooth are oriented primarily horizontally and vertically.Color. Hue: tone - Value: luminosity or shine; Chroma: saturation or intensity of the color. Configuration of the incisal edge: Over the years the incisal edges wear down, so if we want to give youthfulness we must lengthen the incisal edges. Lower lip line: The coincidence between the incisal edges and the lower lip is essential to obtain the harmony of the teeth and a pleasant dental aesthetic. Dental symmetry: The occlusal line should follow the commissural line (parallel). Median line is centered on 70% of the population.
